Nawashi
“rope master” — nawa, rope; shi, a master or professional of a craft
A title for an accomplished rope practitioner, used sparingly in Japan and more loosely in English.
The -shi suffix marks a practised professional: it is the same ending found in words for other skilled trades. Applied to rope, it carries weight, and in Japan it is generally used about someone rather than by them.
English-language practice uses the word more freely, and also uses “rigger” for the person tying and “bottom” or “model” for the person being tied. None of these are protected terms, and none of them tell you anything about someone’s training. If credentials matter to you, ask who someone studied with and for how long.
