Questions worth asking a rope instructor
Practical questions to ask a rope venue or instructor before you book — about the room, the format, and how they handle safety.
You are allowed to ask questions before booking, and how a venue answers them is information in itself. None of the below is confrontational; all of it is ordinary for any teaching business.
About the class
- Is this suitable for someone who has never done this before?
- Do I need to bring a partner, and do I need to bring rope?
- How many people will be in the room, and how many teachers?
- Is the class clothed?
- What will we actually cover?
About how the room runs
- Do you have a written code of conduct I can read?
- Is there someone to raise a problem with, and who is it?
- What is your photography policy?
- Do you offer any first-timer briefing before the class starts?
About safety
- How do you handle it if someone reports numbness or tingling?
- Is there a trained first-aider present?
- For suspension classes: what are your hard points rated for, and who inspects them?
